The central location of Krems in relation to Europe as a whole, puts Krems in an ideal position to act as a business hub between eastern and western Europe. The city is located on the thousand-year-old trade route between east and west, which was determined by the course of the navigable Danube river. Vienna International Airport (Wien-Schwechat), is located on the motorway to Krems, approximately an hour's drive away.
The most important European motorway between east and west connects Krems with Vienna's ring motorway and with the motorway network of central and eastern Europe. Krems is directly linked to S5 (Vienna), S33 (St. Pölten) and B37 (North) and to the Austrian railway system (ÖBB).
